When in Rome.

A self portrait in oils on canvas. 14 x 18 in.

It evokes the atmosphere. Bright spring sunshine in Rome at Easter April 2013.  I have spent some time in creating a likeness this time and I am happy with it.

When in Rome

This is taken from a photograph of me in Rome recently. I wanted to capture the sun and light and didn't take too much time to create an accurate representation of me. So not a very good likeness but I\ like the portrait as it is.
I used conté crayons and pastel on paper.

During the Easter holidays my son George sat for me for a portrait reading his maths book. This is a section of the painting which is in the sitting room in our house. I did all of it from life and I am just working on the chair and the surroundings.
The idea of this composition came from a portrait of the artist Laura knight by her husband, Harold Knight,  a portrait artist. That painting was created in the early 30s and reflects the style of dress and environment of the time. I wanted to do a portrait  that shows the contemporary look.
