Self portrait

I don't normally do self portraits. I find it hard to draw myself, looking at my reflection in the mirror.  I am also not that interested in depicting myself. (Though that might change). However, due to the lack of sitters,  I decided to do a self portrait. It is only a charcoal sketch on newspaper. Why the newspaper? It gives some interest and something to work with. The print and the images create an aura. In this instance I incorporated the flying birds in my hair. Birds feature often in my work and particularly the swallows. I use them as metaphors. So it was appropriate to  included them as part of the overall image.
I reworked this drawing which I did some time ago. Charcoal and pencil on paper.

"The Lost Girl"

Charcoal and pastel on newspaper. 16 x 24 inches

The starting point came from a photograph I found in a newspaper article. I liked the expression on the woman's face. I adapted it and created this drawing which still has the same expression on the face. The lost Girl. A woman who has missed out on the important things in life, being too busy living the free spirit, independent and party girl kind of life.
