Portrait of a blonde

This is  Sandra. Works at the centre where I teach drawing.

selfportrait

Here you have to examine your own face and find out a lot about yourself. it's not like looking in the mirror. It goes deeper than that. It feels you are trying to see through your inner self. Is that why so many artists embraced self portraiture? Painted themselves over and over again?

Drawing people

This is a Japanese friend of mine, called Satomi. Drawing people  is a real revelation . You see things you never saw before. You really have to examine their faces and challege your preconceptions about how faces are. They are all different. Especailly when they are peole from different races. As an artist who draws people you really think you know them better after you've drawn them. . Getting their individual gaze and  expression though is the most difficult part and the most rewarding.

Oil on canvas

Acrylic on canvas

Recent work from life drawing. I have created these two works on canvas from initial pencil drawings form life. Expressive and vibrant colour is used. I favour work that does not have a photographic realism  but paintings that show  imagination. I don't want to recreate an image on canvas but create something new.
The first painting is done using brushes the second is created with pallete knife.
